DUCATI 848 Nicky Hayden Edition (2010)

Click Thumbnail to download (size 1600 x 1200 pixels)

Ducati North America is proud to announce the 848 Nicky Hayden Edition. This striking livery places a distinctly American stamp on the market’s best middleweight sport bike. We are excited to unveil this model in conjunction with the Red Bull United States Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, as there is no better time to celebrate the American World Champion than at his home race on the 4th of July. This US-exclusive model features an American inspired paint scheme, aptly fit for its introduction on the 4th of July, personally autographed gas tank, and model updates for the 2010 year. MSRP is $14,495, and will be available July 7 at authorized Ducati dealers.

So light, but so powerful
The new Ducati 848 Nicky Hayden Edition enjoys all the performance advancements of the entire Superbike family, while adding its own innovations to redefine the middleweight sport bike class.

The words ‘agile’ and ‘refined’ aptly describe the 848. At 168kg (369lbs) the 848 is an amazing 20kg (44lbs) lighter than its predecessor, and a significant 5kg (11lbs) lighter than its larger capacity brother, the 1098.

The highly advanced 848 engine uses an improved method of engine case production in which cases are vacuum die-cast formed. While providing significant weight savings of more than 3kg (6.5lbs), this method also ensures consistent wall thickness and increased strength. Further refinements include a sophisticated wet clutch that offers 1kg (2.2lbs) less weight, a much higher service life, improved clutch feel and quiet operation.

With the first twist of the wrist, the powerful rush of the Testastretta Evoluzione engine confirms that the rules have changed. The 848’s 134hp is not only 30% more powerful than its predecessor, but it provides a power-to-weight ratio even better than the potent 999.

New for 2010:
Available immediately, the 848 Nicky Hayden Edition is the first of the 2010 Ducati 848 models to arrive in showrooms. For 2010, this model features several upgrades in addition to the special Hayden livery and full specifications listed below, including:

= LED dash illumination for better visibility – particularly at night
= Inclusion of a 30mm mirror extension kit, enabling a choice of two stem lengths for better vision
= Aluminium cam belt tensioner pulleys to reduce weight and moving mass; in turn enabling better acceleration

Features and Benefits
Engine
The 848 Testastretta Evoluzione engine becomes the benchmark for the middleweight sportsbike category, benefitting from all the experience accumulated with the larger engine on the 1198. It successfully adopts the same design guidelines and the same compact cylinder and cylinder head layout, but introduces for the first time ever an innovative solution for the crankcase, which has been designed with a further weight reduction for this advanced engine in mind. The overall layout of this engine integrates a series of avant-guard solutions, confirming the close links with the experience of Ducati’s racing department.

The 849cc engine has bore and stroke values of 94mm and 61.2mm respectively, which produce a ratio that is only slightly inferior to the 1098 (1.54 compared with 1.61), while maintaining the highly ‘over-square’ layout typical of racing engines.

Power output is an impressive 134hp (98.5kW) at 10,000 rpm and maximum torque is 71 lb/ft (96Nm) at 8250 rpm. The power and torque values confirm the high performance level of this engine, especially when compared to its predecessor, the Testastretta-engined 749.

The cylinder head has been modified in line with the characteristic bore and stroke of the engine in order to optimize the fluid dynamics of the intake (straight and plunging) and exhaust ducts and combustion chamber. The compression ratio is 12:1.

The valve angle is the same as the 1198 engine and diameter is 39.5mm for the inlet valve and 32mm for the exhaust. The technology used sees the application of a bi-metallic alloy that combines increased lightness with resistance and reliability required for these particular components. The desmodromic control system has also been designed with the weight and the inertia of the new components in mind, allowing extremely efficient valve lift during intake and exhaust phases. The excellent results achieved are confirmed by the engine’s power figures, producing outstanding performance thanks also to the use of MotoGP-derived elliptical throttle bodies, which have been fitted to the 1198 engine. The 2010 model year sees the addition of new lightweight cam belt tensioner pulleys; improving performance while shaving weight.

The design of a dedicated elliptical throttle body for the 848 demonstrates the attention that Borgo Panigale engineers have devoted to the development of the Superbike range. The cross-section is reduced from the 60 sq. mm of the 1098 to 56 sq. mm so as to optimize fluid dynamics at every engine speed. Just like on the 1098, the new cylinder heads benefit from fewer components and include magnesium covers.

This Testastretta Evoluzione engine sees the introduction of a special technology for the construction of the engine crankcase: Vacural casting. This is a forced vacuum die casting method that allows jet characteristics to be improved thanks to the absence of porosity, gas inclusion and oxidation. This allows extremely high measurement precision and greater ductility for aluminium alloy. Designers have been able to harness the benefits of this innovative process by redefining the shape and the wall thickness of the new crankcase by means of FEA (Finite Element Analysis) checks, which allowed the required reliability standards to be achieved, while simultaneously obtaining a significant weight saving of 3.5kg.

The 848 engine is fitted with a silent modular wet clutch, characterized by an exceptional resistance to wear that will lead to superior duration. This solution makes a useful contribution to weight saving, estimated to be around 1.6kg, which is also due to the use of a different type of clutch cover.

The high power figures achieved by this engine also come from the use of the same type of oil cooler and coolant radiator as the 1198’s engine, with an increased surface area assisted by lightweight, high flow electric fan assemblies.

Finally, the 848’s exhaust system follows the same layout and uses the same innovative technology as the 1198. The system terminates with Ducati’s trademark twin under-seat silencers, delivering the unmistakable signature sound of the big bore 90° L-Twin.

This power unit, just like all the other Ducati engines, has been designed to comply with Euro 3 exhaust emission norms.

Chassis
Trellis frame
Developed in cooperation with Ducati Corse, the 848 Trellis frame has a simplified tube layout featuring main section tubes increased in diameter from 28mm to 34mm, while being reduced in thickness from 2mm to 1.5mm. The result is a 14% increase in rigidity and a weight saving of 1.5kg (3.3lbs).

Single-sided swingarm
The 848, as all the Superbike family, is equipped with a unique single-sided swingarm. The engineers were encouraged to re-think the construction technique of this element. The solution was to produce the main operational components using individual aluminium castings so as to ensure strength around the pivot points, wheel hub and suspension links, with fabricated aluminium sections used to complete the construction into a single, beautifully engineered component.

Rear suspension
Highlighting the way in which individual components are influenced by each other, the new lightweight Trellis frame and single-sided swingarm have enabled a more compact and further weight-saving rear suspension linkage system to be used featuring separate lower pick-up points for the push-rod and suspension unit. This ‘tandem’ design effectively reduces stress around the linkage pick-up area of the Trellis frame. Working together with this highly efficient linkage is a fully adjustable Showa single shock for the 848, the same as the 1198.

Front suspension
At the front the 848 is equipped with fully adjustable 43mm Showa forks with radial mounts. This type of front suspension is professionally track-tuned and offers superior road holding, delivers superior feedback, and helps every rider to be more confident and in control.

Control
Brembo Monobloc calipers
The 848 brake system is characterized by M4 calipers using four 32mm pistons and two radial mounted pads. Matched to the calipers are two 320mm discs and the combination of these elements achieves spectacular braking power.

Super lightweight wheels
The 848 also benefits from lightweight Marchesini Y-shaped spoke wheels. The weight saving of 250gr achieved on the front wheel substantially reduces the moment of inertia and enhances the 848’s change of direction and braking performance. The rear wheel is just as impressive with a complete redesign for its single-sided swingarm application that has resulted in a reduction of over 1kg compared with traditional Ducati single-sided swingarm fitments. Finally a 5.50” wheel fitted with a 180/55 tyre guarantees the maximum agility at the rear.

Electronics
Desmosedici-style digital instrumentation is taken from Ducati’s MotoGP GP9 project; and for 2010 now features LED backlighting for better visibility. This pure racing, minimalist solution has no switches or buttons to compromise its clean lines. Instead, information additional to the default read-outs is managed by handlebar-mounted switch gear, allowing the rider to scroll through and select from various menus. The default read-out presents rpm and speed, with the former displayed across the screen in a progressive bar graph. Optionally, the rpm and speed can be displayed in numeric values. The instrument display also doubles as a control panel for the activation of the data acquisition system as well as listing lap times recorded by using the high-beam flash button as a stopwatch.

With the purchase of the Ducati Data Analyser (DDA), which includes PC software, a USB-ready data retrieval card and instructions, owners are ready to review and analyse the performance of the bike and its rider, and make comparisons between various channels of information. The DDA is available from Ducati Performance.

Normally used on race bikes only, the system records numerous channels of data including throttle opening, vehicle speed, engine rpm, engine temperature, distance travelled, laps and lap times. The system also automatically calculates engine rpm and vehicle speed data so as to also display gear selection as an additional channel of information. At the end of a ride or track session, up to 2mb (approximately 3.5 hours) of data can be downloaded to your PC ready to compare, analyse and get an inside view of you and your 848’s performance.

Data can be analysed in graphic form with options to zoom into detail of specific sections. Dragging a trace along a timeline to reveal individual values of the above listed channels enables the user to analyse performance in the same way that data technicians are able to do in factory teams.

Highly Anticipated 2010 Ducati Hypermotard 796 Launched
The Supermotard craze came about from a melding of influences pulled from both street bike and dirt bike racing. Ducati took notice and jumped in with both feet when they introduced their Hypermotard concept back in 2005. It created such a splash that when the production version was first unveiled in 2006, the sheer volume of interest actually brought down the website. International deliveries began in 2007 with two flavors offered - the 1100 base model and the 1100S, featuring higher caliber components.

The US didn't see a Hypermotard model until 2008, by which time Ducati finally released a black-on-black frame for the 1100S, creating the first opportunity to cop a non-red Hypermotard and piquing our interest. As appealing as this bike is, the price point of $14,995 for the S and $11,995 for the base 1100, is a little steep for many potential customers. Fret no more... Ducati has just unveiled a new sub-$10,000 Hypermotard 796.

The Ducati Hypermotard 796 sports an all-new air-cooled engine with 2 valves per cylinder, putting out 81hp and 56 lb-ft of torque. The top and bottom fork clamps have been redesigned and the frame layout adjusted to virtually eliminate all of the forged elements found on the 1100. As such, the Hypermotard 796 weighs in at a svelte 368 pounds. Other features include an APTC clutch and single-sided swingarm.

The first chance to peep the Ducati Hypermotard 796 in person will be at Milan's EICMA international motorcycle show. If travel plans to check out a motorcycle aren't in the cards, this bike will be available in Ducati showrooms in December for a base price of $9,995. Color choices will include Ducati red or matte black and matte white.
2010 Ducati Hypermotard 796 First Ride

His insatiable thirst for life is only surpassed by his monthly fuel bill. Whether rocketing on land, flying through the air, or jumping the seas, our Associate Editor does it all and has the scars to prove it.

It’s hard to believe that almost three years have passed since Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati released its original Hypermotard 1100 motorcycle. This machine created a new class in motorcycling—a mechanical and aesthetic fusion between the world of high-performance sportbikes and supermotos. Starting next year, Ducati expands the category with the introduction of the 2010 Ducati Hypermotard 796.

The 796 was designed to allow a wider range of motorcyclists to experience the unique thrill of a Hyper. To do this, engineers outfitted it with a friendlier powertrain including a smaller engine and easier-to-use clutch, decreased weight, different suspension components, and a lower seat. To see if Ducati got it right we traveled to its home in Borgo Panigale (an enclave of Bologna, Italy) to experience it in the adjacent foothills of this legendary motorcycling company.

Downsized Original?
Propulsion is provided by a redesigned L-Twin engine based off the unit used in the Monster 696. The engine utilizes the same 88mm bore but has an 8.8mm-longer stroke (now measuring 66mm total). Different pistons with a reshaped crown boost compression to 11.1:1. Other updated internals include the connecting rods, crankshaft, as well as the cases which are lighter and more compact. One of the key components that is still shared is the 696’s relatively low-tech 2-valve cylinder heads which use Ducati’s proprietary Desmodromic valve actuation system. Despite the engine actually growing, Ducati claims that this engine gets superior fuel mileage as compared to the 696 engine.

Fuel is pumped down from the 3.3-gallon plastic fuel tank into 45mm throttle bodies, each equipped with its own fuel-injector. Meanwhile, exhaust is purged through a 2-1-2 stainless-steel exhaust system and is expelled from Ducati’s signature twin under-tail mufflers. The exhaust uses a sculpted metal pre-silencer which also houses the catalytic convertor for Euro 3 emissions conformity. Furthermore each pipe is fitted with an oxygen sensor in order to help facilitate optimum engine fueling. A 6-speed transmission transfers power back to the rear wheel via a chain final drive, while a hydraulically operated APTC wet clutch with slipper-action functionality augments the gearbox.

The engine is hung within a steel frame of identical measurement as the 1100. The 796’s frame however benefits from a new forming process which reduces weight without compromising rigidity. Both the top and bottom fork clamps are also new. The clamps hold a new non-adjustable 43mm Marzocchi inverted fork. Above is a tapered aluminum handlebar. Rear suspension consists of a Sachs hydraulic shock absorber that moves through a linkage and connects to the aluminum single-sided swingarm. As opposed to the fork, the shock offers adjustment for spring preload and rebound damping. Lastly, the seat itself was shortened by 0.8 inches and now measures 32.5-inches from the ground.

The 796 rolls on similar-spec aluminum wheels as the 1100, measuring 3.5 x 17-inches up front and 5.5 x 17-inches at the rear. The rims are shod with Bridgestone BT-016 multi-compound tires in sizes 120/70 front and 180/55 rear. Brakes consist of twin 305mm rotors up front, which are controlled by radial-mount 4-piston Brembo calipers. The rear brake disc measures 245mm in diameter and is independently controlled by a twin-piston caliper. Stainless-steel brake lines front and rear complement the set-up.

Visually, it’s difficult to distinguish the 796 from the 1100 as the majority of its parts are shared including its plastic hand guards with integrated LED turn signals, flip-out mirrors, and LED taillight that glows brighter during braking. Aside from those components a keen eye will see the differences in suspension, tires, and belly exhaust pre-silencer, as well as the updated orange-backlit instrument panel as used on the Streetfighter (Learn more about it in the 2010 Ducati Streetfighter First Ride.) Likewise, it shares the same slim-line switchgear. Another subtle difference is the conventional box shape of the front brake and clutch master cylinder reservoir. All said and done, the 796 is claimed to weigh 27 lbs. less than the 1100, which means its curb weight should measure just over 400 lbs.

Entry-level Performance?
On paper, the 796 has everything it takes to be classified as an entry-level motorcycle within Ducati’s model line-up. A lower 32.5-inch seat height, 803cc air-cooled engine, minimally adjustable suspension, and a price tag of $9,995. Although it is in fact not as sharp-edged as its larger displacement sibling, it isn’t what we’d exactly term a motorcycle for beginners.

Jump into the saddle and one will notice its hybrid seating position. It feels like a cross between the flat pinion of a sportbike and the narrow seat of a dirt bike. Yet it is clearly more aligned with the pavement realm. Equally as apparent is the lower position of the seat. The difference is two-fold: First, it allows a six-foot tall rider to plant both feet firmly on the ground. Second, it elevates the position of the handlebar slightly, which is well appreciated considering how awkwardly low it feels on the 1100. Even though the seat has been lowered it isn’t so much to make the cockpit feel cramped even for a taller rider. Wrap your fingers around the control levers and you’ll be able to adjust their position fore or aft in four increments. Sliding the red starter “trigger” up reveals the starter button. Press it and you’re off and running.

The 796’s APTC clutch makes the clutch lever feel almost weightless. Its first gear matches well allowing the rider to motor away from a stop easily with little clutch slippage. Twisting the throttle reveals an engine that churns out an impressive amount of power. It presents none of the lethargic qualities of the 696 mill, but at the same time it might be too robust for an inexperienced rider. The engine’s rough running manners at low rpm only exacerbates this and makes us wonder why Ducati motorcycles can’t run smoothly at low rpm. Keep the revs above 4000 however, and the engine shows none of the aforementioned characteristic, instead delivering a smooth, fat spread of power all the way to the top of the tachometer. Overall engine sound is throaty but we did hear an irritating metal vibration-type noise that sounded like it was being emitted from the pre-silencer.

Shorter final-drive gearing assists the bike in gaining momentum fast. Unfortunately, its transmission lacks the precision of its Japanese rivals plus it’s almost impossible to find neutral at a stop. Based on previous experience, however, the gears feel like they move more freely after break-in. Despite the clutch offering an extremely light lever pull, we weren’t wowed by the vague feel when the clutch is engaged aggressively or by the ineffectiveness of the “slipper-action” clutch.

The foothills to the south of the Ducati factory put a real premium on a nimble-handling motorcycle and it is here that the 796 really shines. As soon as you even think about changing directions, the bike is already there. Yet its handling manners are neutral and the bike never turns more or less than what the rider inputs. Equally as pleasing is how stable the chassis is, especially considering how softly sprung both the fork and shock are. An elevated pace will cause the rearend to G-out and drag hard parts. Yet, despite the undersprung spring rates, the overall balance front-to-rear is a massive improvement over the 1100.

Although the fork offers zero adjustability, we actually prefer the stock-for-stock damping characteristics of the 796’s fork as compared to the adjustable one found on the 1100. Specifically it offers slightly more initial damping and significantly more return damping. Granted you can achieve a similar set-up with the adjustable unit but you have to literally close the compression and rebound damping circuits to do so. The shock on the other hand offers adjustment for spring preload and rebound damping, but we didn’t have time to adjust it. Overall, the only complaint we have with the suspension is that both ends still lack sufficient initial damping. For instance, whenever you slam open the throttle, the weight transfers rearward and the rearend instantly squats. Conversely, when you let off the throttle the weight instantly transfers forward and causes the frontend to dive excessively. If engineers could just dial in more initial damping front and rear we’d think they’d have a terrific overall package. Lastly, traction afforded by the stock Bridgestone tires is literally amazing especially when you consider just how dirty and wet some of the roads we encountered were.

We’ve never been a fan of the lower-spec non-monobloc Brembos that come on the base Hypermotard 1100 or 848 Superbike, but on the 796 they’re remarkable. No doubt the 796’s lowered terminal velocity and reduced unsprung weight tax the braking system less, nonetheless they are effective at quickly shedding speed while offering a confident lever feel. We also love how visible the instrumentation is and the high-tech feel of the handlebar mounted switch gear. While we really appreciate the flip-out mirrors, their outright functionality is questionable as they make it more prone for you to clip cars while slicing through traffic and the view they provide isn’t very clear.

A Better Hypermotard?
That depends. There’s no doubt that the Hypermotard 796 isn’t without fault. Its low rpm engine manners definitely could be improved upon, as could its suspension which lacks adequate damping through the top of suspension stroke. Then there is the weird exhaust vibration noise...

At the end of the day the most important single feature of the bike is that it’s a blast to ride. Even better is that Ducati has made its level of performance more accessible to all riders. Keep the rpms up and you’ll be amazed at how much power the engine cranks out. Conversely, its brakes are strong enough to keep you throughly entertained when slowing becomes a priority. The chassis confidently inhales tight, backroads like few other sport motorcycles, plus it looks awesome and can be mistaken for no other machine on the road. If you’re planning on doing trackdays or blasting around fast sections of roadway then you’re going to want the extra speed generated by the Hyper 1100. However, if your riding game takes place primarily in the city or on the tightest, sketchiest backroads you can find, than the 796 is the motorcycle for you.
